289 camshaft advice needed
Need some technical advice here. 65 fastback 289 C code, 131,000 miles. Mechanic replaced timing chain and gears. A few days later car stops running, not getting any fuel. Fuel pump eccentric has come loose frome the camshaft. We thought the mechanic forgot to tighten it. He went back in, put it back together, ran great for a few days, then same problem. Took it back apart and the same thing has happened. He now says that the camshaft has too much fore and aft movement, allowing the pin that holds the eccentric in place to back out. Wants to replace the cam and lifters. Could the camshaft have that much movement with out having other problems? I don't want to pay this guy to replace the cam and lifters only to find out that the motor needs to be torn down again for more serious repairs. Any advice would be appreciated.

I dont think the cam can move that much there is a keeper plate that bolts to the block to prevent this. I have seen the replacement cam dowels for the ecentric be too short. Hutch is right locktite everything.
