Default what do you run for fuel?

My manual calls for minimum 94 octane (if i remember correctly)

i have always run 91 because that is the highest available here in CA (other than race or jet fuel)

There are a lot of modern vehicles that run much higher compression than mine and recommend 87 octane

Do our manuals just suggest 94 because that was the lowest grade at the time of production?

What do you guys use...and do you run any additives?

well first off when that manual was made for that car, it was 30+ years ago, and at that time the only thing offered was lead gasoline. Im not sure where there octane ratings are coming from, but my girlfriends acura also suggests 94 octane, but we cant find except at the airport where i work, but i think they would wonder what my musangs doing on the vsr

It depends on your compression ratio, cam and timing and do you knock or ping? I'll bet with your setup, you might even get away with midgrade.

all of the internals of my engine are stock
i think my timing is at 10* BTDC

i am getting some pinging now with 91 octane...i've used Exxon, Arco, Shell, etc.....but the fuel didn't make a difference

When it stops raining (rain in San Diego???) I will retard my timing a little.

Does retarding it 1* at a time make a big difference or should I use different increments?

It could make the diff...have you used techron? Maybe your chambers are choked and your CR is high because of it.

have you used techron?
do you mean chevron fuel from the pumps or is there a "techron" additive that you buy?

I have put octane booster in the tank before and it didn't stop the ping so it must be a timing issue

I put in 87 octanem, and in my shop manual, it says the fuel required, for a 2V is regular. My engine does not ping with it either.

The additive, techron, comes in a little bottle at the autoparts store. Give it a shot.
