Default engine management system

the more i think about it, the more i want to go with a full engine management system and run fuel injection in my 302. in my backyard i have a 302 from a 1986 pickup which is carb, and my dad has a 302 from ??? which is fuel injected that he is planning on putting in a 67 f100 we have back there as well. he wants to go carb'ed on his truck, so i'm sure i could just trade engines him w/ no problems.

my question is: now that i have an engine w/ a factory fuel injection system on it, which engine management system would you guys recommend for a simple beefed-up streetable application? i have a friend who can do all of the proper tuning for me, and he's recommending a kit by AEM, but i was hoping to find something not so expensive. also, i'm getting an aftermarket harness (probably from that company called 'painless') to replace my 39 year old one. what cheaper kits have you had success with? i'm pretty noob to EFI.

or am i just dumb to think i can get an EMS for under a grand?

i wouldnt call myself a pro at EFI, however i know enough. Hell i was happy and still am happy with the way the efi runs in the 5.0's ive owned. But it sounds like a hell of a lot of work especially if you arent to familair with what ur doing, but judging from the amount of work you have already done to the car you should have no problem....god i wish i worked as hard as you do. i think when i got out of college, it went down hill from there, now im just lazy as all hell, thank god i work out, or id be a fat *** lardo who would need oxygen just to walk out to the car...no offence to anyone thats a fat ***

EFI is the way to go, but it looks somewhat complicated:

Sweet! It is always nice to have an expert in at least one aspect of a restore. Good luck!
