Are 66 Mustangs exempt from smog checks in California ? I was unaware of that. I know that my 79 F-150 that I bought from California last year was being inspected annually.
Cars 30 years of age and older are smog exempt here in CA.....I took all my smog equipment off but kept it just in case I want to return it to original someday

the fact that us "old guys" took the smog stuff off and threw it away is EXACTLY what makes smog system components so desirable today. Dean

OK....by whom? Who do you know who will actually buy that old crap? Is it even marketable?

Look guys, I didn't intend to start an argument here. The fact is that Soaring challenged my remarks in a manner which I found to be unacceptable. He was doubting my credibility and I can only be expected to defend my remarks. I simply wanted to encourage the saving of these rare pieces. Are they valuable? Most assuredly so. In fact there are some of these items offered on ebay as we speak. My comments regarding the color of his car are simply an illustration of individual tastes. He doesn't like smog and I am fully aware of that point. However, the fact that he views these smog components as worthless doesn't make it so. It means they are worthless to him, but that's about it. Moderator or not, your opinion is no more valuable than mine and if you question my credibility with an off handed comment, you should expect a response of like kind. Dean

DEAN.. I got where u were coming from. And as for the 'old guys' comment.. Well if it wasn't for 'old guys' i would have a garage only mustang. Talking to the guys that lived it during the muscle car era is invaluable.

Anybody reading this i love this forum.. so many helpful people.. Lets not bash each other.. WE MUSTANG BAND OF BROTHERS..

SURLY1 i agree. if not showing as "original" and emission laws don't require it do as you please.. But KEEP the parts.. I still have my smog stuff. I'm in North Carolina and have a 68 coupe (bought in my home town brand new). Equipped w/ smog stuff.. I will try and get you some pics of my setup. My motor was bored .30, 4b Edlebrock 650 Performer Carb, Performer Intake, Ceramic Headman headers. Original (i believe 50 series) flowmaster pipes with 2.5 inch pipes capped w/ chrome waffle tips.. It doesn't burn up the road like a 427 cobra or anything, but you wouldn't know it by the way it sounds.. Sounds like the devil himself is coming through the ground to get your as*... ENJOY my brother. As for $1200 paint jobs... Your right if you get a real paint job it'll be 5 or 6 G. Stripped to nothing and body filled and done right.. not taping out and shooting.. Take your time.. Do it like you want it.. Research and learn and make it right.

Peace Dean. As I have said on many occasion, my opinion is no more valid than yours. Although a moderator, I am still a member of this forum just as you are. It is my opinion that the old smog devices used on the 60's model Mustangs put on by the San Jose plant in California are worthless today. There is no challenge there. That is just my opinion. If you have a marketable resource to sell those old parts, then more power to you. I understand what your reference to the color of my car relates to. No problem with that analogy.

Fair enough . I just hate to see these old cars altered too severely and I really hate to see people make changes that can't be reversed. I guess that makes me a "purist" as my buddies put it. We're all a part of the Mustang family and I absolutely agree that we should get along. I've been collecting Fords and Ford parts for well over 25 years and I have developed a pretty keen eye for what is rare, unique or valuable. With regard to my remarks about the color issue. I certainly wasn't dissing your car. Believe me, i've heard my share of off handed remarks about my 73 being "big" , "heavy" , "not really a Mustang" etc... It used to make me crazy but then I realized that it was a lot easier to get my 6'3" 240 pound *** in and out of my big , heavy car. The tilt wheel and 4 speed is nice and with a gentle massage of the original Cleveland CJ before reinstallation, it gets around just fine. Just my 2 cents worth. Dean

You are preaching to the choir. I am probably one of the "purist" mustang owners on this board. So, I guess I am in good company.

Where was a day when I worked for a company that was pulling smog stuff off of cars in Colorado and selling it to garages in California. The stuff was in very high demand. If it came from the factory with it, it had to have it to pass smog. Until about 6 or 8 (maybe 10) years ago the classic stangs still had to be smogged. Now that they are exempt, from smog the stuff is not in demand so much any more. I believe the smog exemption is anything 73 and older. The only other reason I could think of for need that crap is if you restoring a California built car to concours condition and wanted it exactly as the factory built it. I still wouldn't throw the stuff away though.
