I would be very hesitant to remove the factory original smog stuff. It is pretty hard to find one of these old horses with all of its' pieces intact and believe it or not... it does add to its' value. If you just can't help yourself and it has to come off, put it in a box somewhere and don't cut anything when you remove it. Unbolt everything and then when someone decides to restore the car, they'll have it. Good luck, Dean
I agree with rsrxion. I will add that the only 66's with smog stuff were Claifornia delivered cars. The plugs can be had at about any parts store. I assume by replacement pulley you are talking about a different pulley for when you take the smog pump off. You should be able to get a shorter belt and not worry about that at all. Been a while since I've seen one with a smog pump so i can't remember for sure. If the car has a good tune up now it should not be affected much by removing the smog stuff.
i have a 68 coupe 289, 2b, 3spd, single exhaust. I removed all the smog stuff and went to 4b carb, headers and dual flowmaster exhaust. An older guy helped me through my mechanic work and when it came to smog parts he told me they use to take em off and trash em right away. They had a lot of problems w/ em and like the other guys mentioned.. Power Robbing. You can leave the pulley mounting bracket, it will just have a vacant slot where the smog pump had gone.
