New top
Hi, I'm doing all the bodywork on my 1989 LX convertible. I'm going to spray it in flat black primer and leave it. I love the color...
So.... It has a white top right now, it's used dirty and has a good tear in the passenger side. I found replacement tops for $145. How hard would it be if I bought a black one and put it on myself? How much would it cost to have it professionally done? What if I bought the top and had it professionally installed?
Thanks guys!

I looked at doing my top myself and chickened out. I have a friend that did his own, and it took him a week. You have to a lot of sewing and fitting to get it to fit right. The replacement tops I found were just the material. I had my professionally replaced, and it cost about 1100.00, that included new cables, new bows, new seals, and a new back glass(real glass). If you do it yourself, good luck and lets see some pics. My buddy that did his on his own swore that he would never do it again, it is worth the expense to have it done professionally. My guy did mine in 3 days, and purchased the new top from Ford. Check with whoever you decide to do the top to see if they would let you purchase the top yourself and put it on for you. My original top was canvas, and not fabric, and that is what I wanted to go back with. Let me see if I can find a pic. It may be a bit dark, sorry for that.
Your Mustang is sexy.
Here are some pics of my Stang, from yesterday after some sandblasting....

I wont actually get to lay any filler until next weekend.... My fater is going to grind and prime it for me though while I'm out of the state for the week.

Looks good. Are you going to do the painting yourself? I have always been able to tear up more than I could fix doing body work, paint is not so bad. Keep me posted on the progess. Are you planning on wheels when you finish? And thanks for the compliment, I have worked my rear off on her.
Well, it's my first car so my father is helping me alot. He;s been doing cars for 40+ years. I want to learn all I can about cars. So my father and I are doing all the work but he's showing me the ropes. I hope he let's me shoot the paint though!
My mother gave me the Stang a month ago after she got a Explorer. She drove it all winter (what a pain).
Right now it's a 4 bolt setup..... I'm not going to drop any money on 4 bolt wheels. Someday I will eventually have a fuel injected 351W under the hood. Then I will obviously do a 5 bolt swap, then I will be ready for the wheels.
I never liked two tone Stangs' but yours looks damn nice, the colors go together really good.

I almost went with a single color scheme, but I do get compliments on the color of the car. So I decided to keep the original colors. Thanks for the comments, I am in the process of doing some touch ups and repainting.
