It is possible to paint wheels. Attention to detail with any automotive painting is critical. PREP, PREP, PREP !!! First obviously, you want to remove the wheels and lay them down. Painting upright will guarantee runs. COMPLETELY degrease the wheels inside and out and let them dry. Mask off the tire or better yet remove it from the wheel. Scuff the area to be painted with scotchbright scuff pads (red or green) Again attention to detail. You can use a Dremel with a fine grit bit (240 or 320 grit) for the tight spots. Be sure to get every nook and cranny. Blowing off paint dust as you go. (you will be able to see any spots you missed) After scuffing clean the wheels with denatured alcohol or pre-cleaner, both are available at autobody supply shops. Then when you think they are clean, clean them 2x more. Apply 2 coats of primer being sure the first coat is dry before applying thwe second. Scuff the primer, (Attention to detail) be sure not to scuff through the primer. Clean 2x more. Apply your paint 3 coats or more with drying in between. If you want a glossy finish apply 3 coats of a clear coat that is approved for the type of paint you are using (enamel, laquer etc.)

Good Luck

P.S. make sure you are in a well ventilated area. It is hard to paint when you are seeing double.

Don't do it. Especially black. Every car ive seen with painted black rims looks like a bag full of a.ssholes. I know it's the "cool" and trendy thing to have black rims now a days, but if you want black rims just get new ones.......

Those whose rims looked like sh*t did not do it properly. My family was in the auto painting business from 1966-2005 (RIP Reed St. Autobody) and it can be done quite nicely with spray can paint. I haven't done it on my stangs, but I have on my Jeeps and those were rusty steel wheels. To do it right, plan on the better part of a day.

As for the type of paint I would suggest enamel. Even engine enamel. It is designed to hold up to harsh conditions. One thing I failed to mention in my last post was to lay the paint and clear evenly and lightly (just enough to completely cover it) with each of the 3 or more coats. The clear will protect and make it shine. Looks good with the contrast of a flat black tire.
