Default Winter [Rain/Snow] wheel care...

I don't drive my Mustang in the rain or snow, but it does sit under a car port at my apartments, which somewhat protects it. However, the rain still splashes up onto the wheels a tiny bit. A guy at work who is into showing cars, suggested that I wash the car/wheels, and then (before winter) immediately put a coat of Mothers (or similar) car wax onto the wheels, and then remove with a dry cloth after they dry. He said that the elements would just be deflected more or less away from the wheels. This seems to make sense... Does anyone know if this is a good idea? Will the wax mess up my chrome wheels, or will it protect them? I just bought chrome 22's for my Z71 Silverado this summer too, which I planned on taking off for the winter, but the 22 inch tires grip 100 times better in the rain than my bald-ish stock tires so if this works, I'll throw a coat of wax on those too! Thanks for any info you can offer me!

that is a great idea. wax wont do anything to the chrome other than protect it from spotting.
