Default switching to 5th ?

my friend has a silver 2001 gt and we are always going out on the weekends in his car. he's always in fourth on the freeway... he tells me it does nothing to his transmission because he doesnt go over 65 on the freeway. he works on cars with his father so he's got me wondering if what he is doing is ok for his tranny. i've always thought you have to keep the rpm at lower revolutions, so on the freeway i leave it at fifth when im traveling. is he messing up his tranny by going 65 on the highway??

+1. Wasting gas, putting more wear on the engine, creating more heat in the tranny, etc. My '94 GT Auto shifts into OD at 42ish mph, and will cruise there right around 1100 rpm
