Default compression check?

how could i do a compression check on my 94 pontiac sunbird with a 2.0l 4 cylinder....besides sticking my finger in each hole while starting it....lol
and if it does have low compression, what could be the cause of it and could it be fixed or would sending the motor back be the easiest solution?

you could borrow a compression checker from autozone or a buddy and check it that way

if its low it could be the head gasket leaking/the rings/cracked head

it can be fixed but you would have to tear it down to finger it out

unless you can give us some simptums your experiencing

im guessing its not running?

yeah we just put a motor in it and it just cranks and cranks but wont start.....we did this thing where we put a little oil in the plug holes to make the rings seal up or something like that....and then when i tried to start it it acted like it wanted to start(like it kickedup alittle)but then like a second later it went back to the same way it was sounding.,,,and kept going thatway.....the nearest autozone or auto shop is like 30 miles away but im not sure if its gonna be the compresion or not.....
the timing was right,it had a spark, but not That good of one but still shouldnt be the problem...and its getting fuel....and it had alittle compression but this mechanic friend who works at the chevy place said it wasnt enough and thats why we put the oil and tried that......if u got any other tips or things i could see to help diagnose it,it would help alot
thanks

usually u would stick oil in after a compression check if u got low numbers to see if the rings were bad (least if i remember correctly anyways been awhile) As your buddy says to temp fix the compression issue.....

u will need a compresion check 4 sure to rule it out....
