Help! Grinding going into 2nd at high RPMs
Hi guys - new user here. After being in the Mustang game a few years back (93GT and (95 Cobra Vert) I recently came upon a 97 GT with 38,000 miles. Its a 5 speed and looks flawless inside and out. The only problem I have is when I go to shift into 2nd gear at higher rpm's, it grinds. No issue at lower rpm's. From what I have read on several forums (yeah I searced too), this sound like a syncro.
My question to you Mustang experts are these:
1. Do you think it is a syncro?
2. If so, what's the best way to get it fixed?
3. How much does it cost to fix it and where should I do it at?
Thanks in advance for the counsel and advice. Its the only thing wrong I have seen with the car. I don't drag race or anything like that but its really annoying the few times I get on it to have it grind going into 2nd.

sounds like a synchro to me man.. but it's unusual for it to go out that soon. My 97 i got it with 103000 on the clock and it just started grinding... i replaced the synchros about 2000 miles ago mostly myself and now it's flawless.
before you do anything you can try running a better fluid in it and see if it helps
Usually to have the trans rebuilt is about $1500 labor for the R&R and the rebuild
I'd take it to a shop that specialises in transmissions
for that price tho, strongly consider getting an upgraded trans or one already rebuilt

That happens to me, I have an 04 gt with 15,000 miles. I just got to shift a little slower into 2nd gear than the other gears.
I think someone on here told me earlier that its a few hundred bucks to replace the syncro.

Its definitly the synchros. Can you remove and replace the trans yourself? If so, it would actually be cheaper to get a whole new trans rather than having the one you have rebuilt. Thats been my experience anyway. You can probably pick up a low milage one from a salvage yard for around $500-750. I believe a brand new one is around $1000-1250. Ive blown up around 20 T-5's over the years with my various mustangs (which Ive had 10 of), its better to just replace them, most of mine had bearing failure, and right around that time the synchros were starting to go as well.

Thanks for the low-down. I'll probably just live with it for now as I don't race the car and I can just limit the RPM's when I shift. When I do eventually address this issue, would I be better off getting a different model of tranny instead of chucking the same ole in there again? If you have had that string of luck with T-5's, I'm thinking I might be better off with something else (aftermarket). Thoughts?
