Default Mach 1 in a 1965 Mercury Comet

I'm doing a restomod project of a 1965 Mercury Comet and we're dropping a Mach 1 4.6L DOHC into it. The car is going to be completely modified (Art Morrison Max G chassis, Intro Ram 5 wheels, BFG KDW tires, etc., etc.). A link to a thread about the car in another forum is: http://www.pro-touring.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18856

I won't be racing the car at all . . . I plan to use it as a daily (almost) driver. It's also possible that I'll bring it to some shows. In light of my planned use of the car, I would love to hear the views of the members of this site about the choice of the Mach 1 as an engine. We've already decided not to add a supercharger (seems unneccessary w/o any planned racing), but are there any other ideas about modifications? Headers or no headers? Anything else? Stock says 305 hp, but can we get it to 400 hp through tuning and other modifications (without any blower)? Also, it would be great to hear what everyone thinks generally about the engine in everyday use -- off the line at stop lights, pick up at higher speeds, etc.

Thanks for helping someone who will have a car with a body of a Comet but a heart of a Mustang!

Regards,
Josh

Sounds like a cool project, good luck with it! You'll probably want the Mach 1 tranny that goes with the engine (if you're building an auto) so the computer connections will not cause headaches.

And yeah of course you'll want headers, if for nothing else just to get that nice burbling exhaust note that a classic car like that deserves.

Post updates to your project please!

Thanks Eric. Yup, we're doing the Ford AODE that goes with the Mach 1 -- I wanted a stick, but my wife won out on that discussion. Below are a couple of picks of the car when we got it, after the old 289 was taken out, and after it was blasted. I'll post updates if people don't mind hearing about a non-Mustang on this site. Also, additional views from everyone on the Mach 1 engine will be much appreciated . . . I'm new to Mustang powerplants, but I am excited about it!

Jim,

What is the FE -- the choice of engine or choosing to go with an AOD?

If it's the automatic, I agree, but what can you do when your wife lets you spend the $ on the project with no complaints at all and only asks that it be an automatic? I know, I'm whipped.

If it's the engine, let me know why . . . that would scare me!

Thx,
Josh

Jim,

You're probably right about the big block, but the Mach 1 was chosen for a number of reasons -- e.g., ease of repairs (including going to a dealership if needed in a bind), similar displacement to the original engine, etc. A big block would be pretty awesome -- in fact, while almost all 1965 Comets had the 289, a few Comet Cylones actually snuck out of the factory in 1965 with a 427 (and the Mach 1 4.6L would be no match for a 7.0L).

But, since we already have ordered the Mach 1, I guess we'll be going with it. It's great to have this forum to get some real Mustang folks views on that engine . . . keep 'em coming!

Thx,
Josh
