Default rear end question

i'm looking to buy an 83 cobra gt t-top shell from an autowreckers to rebuild, but the guy says that it's got a posi rear end in it and (unless i pay a pile of money) he'll sell me the car for $100 without the rear end. the car has no engine in it, but is setup for a v8. my question is this: if i get this car, can i only replace it with another posi rear end, or can i use any rear end from another 79-93 mustang? and can it be from a 4 cylinder, v6, or only another v8? thanks for all help...

I just learned from another thread (read: look at other threads)

That Mustang GT's (after said year, I forget what it was) came with Posi rear ends..just pick up a late model rear and you'll have a posi rear end. The v6's and 4's do not have them I believe.

You can use a rear end off of another year model stang, but if you want to throw a an 8 in that body you need to go with an 8.8 rear end.. those 7.5's are to weak....... Plus you can put posi in any rear end... so if you dont want that rear end just look around for another one and they sell the parts you need for them...... Check out Eaton.com

Go with a 8.8 from the same body style as your car. If you're looking for a POSI unit in my opinion best units are the Auburn's. Eaton's aren't bad either.

You COULD get one without the POSI and then switch the POSI from a F-150 into it. I know some people are doing that as a means for a "Cheap" POSI unit.

well xstatic, Ive done 79 2.8L stang convertion before any stang 79-93 rear end should fit, a used posi rear end arent that expensive, to get one built looking around $1000-1200.

Good luck man
