Default emergency brake cable

I recently replaced the rear rotors and pads on my 97 3.8 mustang. The caliper on the passenger side was hung up causing premature failure of the pads on that side. I pulled both brackets off and replaced the caliper pins on both sides. Now when I use the emergency brake, the pads on the drivers side engage the rotor less than the pads on the passenger side. Is there any way to take up the slack on the drivers side or do I need to replace the cable and if so should both sides be replaced.
