Default Measures RPM?

Whats the name for the do-hicky that connects to the engine and measures rpms amoung other things? I know some high dollar timing lights will, but they're pricey.

Tachometer? All that does is report engine RPM though... Tough question to answer [&:]

Instument cluster? (aka speedometer cluster)... uhh, just throwing things out there...

Tach. Many dwell meters and engine diagnostic tools will have a built in tach.

Sorry, I guess my question was vague. I just had a engine rebuilt and its ready to install. I needed some way to read rpms as I do not currently have a tach installed inside the car. I found a nice timing light that reads engine rpm too for $100 and bought it. Thx for the replies.

I guess I'm still not quite sure what you are asking. A tach will display your engine RPMs. And The timing light will do it as well, but unless Im missing what you are asking... I don't see how a timing light that displays your RPM will help out. Unless for some reason you only need to know the RPM while looking under the hood and not while driving or anything.
