Battery question

RE: Battery question

I'm pretty sure I have the orig. battery in my car... from 1998..Well, 1997 actually. When I'm sitting at a stop light or whatever and I put the windows down or up, the headlights go WAY down...
Also, when I bought the car, the local station did a volatge test and it said it needed to be replaced, but it has been fine. Cranking seems a little slow, but nothing extraordinarily bad.
Should I play it safe and get a new battery?

RE: Battery question
For what's it worth, if I may, some free advice from an ole skool dude. Back in the early to mid 70's while I was in the USAF, I worked part time at the BX service station. They sent me to AC Delco battery school. While at the school, they come right out and said if they made a battery that lasted more than 3 years, they didn't mean to make it. Why? Simple. Lets say you spend the big bucks and buy a 5 year battery. 3 years go by and you start having trouble with it. You grab your warrentee and head down to get a new battery. Pro rated, a new one should run around 20 to 30 bux. You are happy. You got a new 5 year battery for some cheap bux. But, think about this...Every 3 years or so, they got you comming back for 20 to 30 bux. Not bad business on their part.
Now, to add insult to injury, the new batterys installed in the new vehicles are designed to be replaced if your battery goes dead. Go figure. For my money, don't splurge, go get an Optima and be done with it. One added feature, a true maintance free battery, plus no rust from battery corrosion.
