Default Soft top

I decided to put this post in this section because it's pretty general.

So my Mustang is a convertable. The back window in the soft top was busted out by some punk kids. I don't want to replace the whole soft top because it's in good shape...anyone know how to put a new window in this thing?

Also, where could I find a replacement door and quarter panel online? Or would I be stuck going down to the junk yard?

I believe the rear window can be had seperately from the top, but am not sure if it's a task you can do without specialized tools. Check the vert section of this forum for more info

you can definately have the rear window replaced by itself. But i would have it done professionally. I was gonna try to do mine myself, but it just seems to risky of a job.

Well what I am thinking I may end up doing is this:

It originally came with a glass window, which I cut my hands all to hell and back cleaning up. I am thinking I am going to buy some plexi glass pre cut for the right size and install it that way, that way i don't have to worry about breaking it or anything.

I don't know though. Also...My driver side door needs replacing. The door, is it different than a standard 93 LX door? Would I need a door specifically for the convertable? I am thinking so but I have barely had the time to look at the door frame.

My back window was broke in my 88 vert and I was quoted several hundred dollars to replace it. I cut a piece of plexi glass and installed it. The first time i put the top down it shattered :-(. I then removed the rear portion of the convertible top(much easier than I expected) and ended up taking it to a marine canvas store that did custom work for fold away boat awnings and other cover related items. They charged me $25 to sew in a thick piece of clear vinyl(?) type material that worked perfectly. It was flexible but yet durable enough to withstand any type of weather, and from a distance you could not tell that it was not the factory glass. They even had tinted shades and were able to match the rest of my window tint. If your on a budget like most of us, this may help you out alot. Good luck!

Nice trick Molly[8D] How is the visiblity looking through the plastic, like when backing up? One concern I would thing is it might haze over like I see on other brand soft tops with plastic windows.

I'd thing plexi would not work too good.. The stock mustang rear glass is not flat, and plexiglass is not easy to bend to the right contour, and also I would think it would be a b!tch to seal out water leaks. Besides, if you're good enough to install a plexi window yourself then why not go get an actual glass replacement & stick that in yourself

The visibility did get a little hazed over with time, but I was also having to scrape snow and ice off of it in the winter (due to not having any more rear defrost) which did not help. Overall you could see other cars fine during the day and at night even with the darker tint. You are correct about the window not being flat, that is the reason that the plexiglass shattered when i put the top down, it's flexible, but not that flexible. Even if you never plan on putting your top down again(yeah right), the plexi just didn't look right, too flat and you could see the indentation of all the edges through the convertible top. I would definitely recommend fixing this yourself no mater what route you go. DON'T try to fix it on the car(that's what I did first and it was pure hell). If i remember correctly it is only 6 nuts or maybe bolts or screws that hold the rear portion of the convertible top on. You do not have to remove the whole top! Also greystang, i did not replace the window with glass because this happened when I was a junior in high school oh so many years ago. Back then I worked at a performance shop and had by far the slowest car there(this is where my nasty addiction to HP started LOL). With the little bit of money I did make, I would put it into things like new exhaust or nitrous, rather than into the appearance of the car. :-)
