why is it that when you switch the overdrive off going fast a cloud of black smoke and **** flies out of the exhaust my frineds v6 99 mustang did it once and yesterday a v6 97 mustang did it as the gurl did a fly by

 

Dunno, but he should be drivin a stick anyways!!! J/K it could be because overdrive supposedly gets better gas mileage, and when you switch it off, fuel is burned at its normal rate and therefore you get the cloud of black smoke. It also could be a problem, so hopefully someone will know...

 

when you shift out of overdrive at higher speeds, the engine rpm jumps up as the engine is acting like a brake since it was running slower in OD than it would be for the same road speed in 1:1 drive, so this makes the engine "cough" up some smoke just like jerking it from 3rd down to 2nd would do with lots of gas pedal applied.

 

it's that split sec to 'puter tries to compensate for a non driver for fuel thus the black some....
