Default gas guage sensor gone bad???

hey guys. everytime i look down at my gas gage its at a different spot. one time it'll be right above a quarter tank, then 5 mins later it will be right under a half a tank. and when i filled the car up today the needle stayed above the full mark for 45 miles. is this normal or should i replace the sensor? my dads '00 mustang 3.8 does this too but it dosent stay over the full mark when filled. any ideas?

mine did that too, turned out that the little float sensor in the tank was broken. it really screwed me up too because at a 1/4 tank it would be empty so id run out of gas.

Depends on how you're driving, too. My '03 stays at or above full for about 70 miles. If I'm around 1/2 tank, I can get the needle to move quite a bit just by how I drive.
