Default Want to make a 5L look like an old 289 questions

Hi all, did a quick intro thing in the newb area.
I have a 51 Mercury pickup with a real bad 289 in it, bad as in knocking and no oil pressure. I have a 89 5L with about 3000 miles on a rebuild with an AOD. I would like to put this motor in and still use the old C-4 due to the fact when it did run it worked good and my speedo was corect and my colum shifter works great and looks like the stock 3 on the tree. Now comes the questions....
What do I need to do to make the new 5L look like the old 289? I don't want to run serp belts and would like to run the C-4. I hear there are different balances? 50.oz and 28.oz. Would also like to run a smooth dizzy, not the one in the 5L with all the goofy plug in biusness. I think I can take my old timing cover and water pump ***. and put it on the 5L, but which flexplate should I use? Can the balancer from a 73 302 that I have laying around work on the 5L?
I know one or more of you has had to have put a 5L in an old Mustang or Falcon ect, and made it look like an early engine. Please help! I have an extra 289 core motor and 2 302's complete, but needing rebuilds laying around for parts and I know I can use intakes, exhaust manifolds ect on a 5L. Also how do I plug the cross overs in the back of the heads? I am confused on this new Vs. old thing. Thanks in advance.

I think the AOD flexplate will work with the c-4. Check your balancer on the 289 to see if it's 4-bolt. If it is you can use the pulley on the FI 302. Or get a pulley from 70 and up 302. Swap out the early timing cover and water pump. Are you switching it to carb? If so, you'll need the fuel pump eccentric off the 289 too. Dizzy is no big deal, just make sure you use a steel gear cam gear.

Thank you, I have 2 302's laying around for parts both the 4 bolt pully type so I should have the parts. On the fuel pump eccentric, there are 2 types 1 piece and 2 piece, which one is the best to use?

You might have to check and see which one works. Sometimes the pin in the cam sticks to far into or through the cam gear. You'll need the one with the hole then. Which ever one works should be fine.

You're probably going to need a new bell-housing. Most 289's are 5-bolts, where 302's are all 6-bolts. Easy enough to check, and replace if necessary. There are several 6-bolt C4 bell-housings around.

You can take all the front accessories, intake and valve covers. I doubt the cam will support the fuel pump eccentric, but it's free to try. You'll know quickly if you have the offset pin in the 5.0L.

You will need a 50oz. flex plate, which should be easy to come by. Or, you can have the 5.0L in to a machine shop and have it balanced to your existing parts for the 289. It'd be about $150 at most shops, plus the rings, bearings, and gaskets you'd need ($200 total if you do the work yourself).

Only very early 289's are 5-bolt. 64 1/2 and early 65. And one of the fuel pump drives will work. I THINK you need the one with the tab, not the hole. I have the fuel pump eccentric on my 84 and it's a 95 roller engine.

Thanks alot fellas, the 5liter I have has an AOD so I should have a flex plate. About the 3 bolt pulley, you wont be able to see that anyway, and all of mine are 4 bolt so that should be just fine. My biggest thing was putting the 5liter and C-4 together, just becuase the truck allready is set up that way with driveline, shift linkage that I made to look like the stock 3 on the tree and it allready has a working acurate speedo and cable ect. and I wanted to keep that vintage look. After some more research and help from you allI have found out I can run that combo 5L/C-4 with the right balances.
Gary that is some good info on the fuel pump eccentric. I think I have both the pin and the tab styles laying around here somewhere as I have nice collection of Ford parts, I never through anything away because I have learned how much fun the Ford interchange game is. Now playing with the 5.0's is like another level of the Ford interchange game, and I like it.
Thanks for all the good info.
