Default Wheel to gear speed

I'm looking at buying a 99 cobra. It has a few bolt on mods, 275/40/17 tires, and a solid axle conversion. Here's my problem. 1st gear tops out at 30mph, 2nd gear tops out at 60mph, 3rd gear only goes to 80mph, so on so on. My buddies 01 cobra pulls all the way to 80mph in 2nd gear. I was thinking that maybe the 99 cobra had gears in it but it really doesnt pull any harder. Any idea what the deal is???? Thanks.

Gears will do that. Sounds like something a bit too deep to take advantage of any power the engine has. Since the car has that kind of work done, you need to ID the tranny and figure out the rear ratio. Lift the rear axle off the ground, brakes off and in neutral. Turn the driveshaft, noting how many driveshaft turns it takes to turn the rear tires once. That's your ratio. Sounds like a 4.56:1 rear, which is a bit on the short side...but has its uses, such as the 1/8 mile.
