Default not mustang, but

Hi, I recently acquired a 1990 crown vic for a descent price and is my only means of transportation untill my mustang is fully mobile. Here's the problem: when going down the road, I can let off the gas a littleand then give it some gas and it revs like it's in neutral. It also seems to be running high rpm's on the highway around 65mph. And gas mileage as horrible. any ideas? 5.0 aod

Sounds like tranny problems. You need to put a tach on there to see what the engine is doing. At a steady cruise in top gear at 65mph, slight pressure on the gas shouldn't move the tach much. A lot of RPM's means the torque converter isn't locking up. Make sure the tranny fluid is in good shape, too.

+1 for the above post.

Gas mileage is going to be horrible. It is a heavy car. You didn't buy an old police cruiser did you? If you did that means the cops beat the crap out of it.

Start by counting the number of times the tranny shifts gear.It would start in first and go to converter lockup for a total of three shifts. They might be very soft so you'll have to pay close attention.
If it's not locking up there should be a code stored in the memory.

It's not an ex cop car luckily. But i dont think it's always going into overdrive either. It also sometimes feels like it's slipping when taking off. I deffinitely dont dirve the car hard and it was owned by a little old lady. new trans filter and fluid. I'm hoping it's just the torque converter......

get a tech to diagnose........you'll pay for the time of course but save you the time chasing the root problem down.

i tried to get the codes pulled from the ecu today, but the techs at advance auto parts couldnt get their reader to work. maybe it was just the guy there but i dont think that the oil or whatever was in the plugs didnt exactly help. Im going to try to get it to a mechanic as soon as i can.
