1966 coupe 289 overheating problem
i've run into a problem.. i have a 1966 coupe 289 v8 4bbl carb. well for things is it's an old engine that been sitting in a field since the 80's, i've just recently got in road ready. i've redone the carb. new exhaust. new radiator 3 rod.. new termostat, the works with my military budget.. one problem at a time. i'veflushed the cooling system many time's.. i'm getting blasted by this problem. i've talked to a few tech's and they tell me one said i need to pull the freeze plugs and flush out the block.. and another said that since it's been sitting out in the field the gaskets could have possibily went out. which is what i'm thinking.. i was told that i could get a chemical from kragen or autozone, that i could put in the cooling system and it would fix the problem.. a gasket sealent.. any idea's would help.. thank you..
Do you have the factory fan shroud? That will help alot. Does it overheat at idle, or cruising? Are you sure it's over heating and not just a bad radiator cap? Adding something like water wetter http://www.redlineoil.com/products_c...ubCategoryID=4will help, but it's better to figure out whats really wrong.
Oh yeah, have you checked the timing or to see if the carb is set lean?

the time has been redune, new radiator cap, new fan and new fan stroud. it over heats at cruising. and it's not a fast over heat it take a few minutes to over heat.. and cruising down hill it cools down.. sitting at stop lights dont help.. i guess that would be at idle huh.. i'm trying to fix what wrong with it but i've found my self in a dead end..and the carb was rebuilt by a tech he did that then did the timing..
Let it heat up with the radiator cap off and look at the flow. Should move pretty quick. What thermostat did you put in? Put it on backwards?Have you added more water since you put the radiator in? What did you use to flush it? Might try pulling the thermostats housing and lower radiator hose and flushing it with a regular hose. See how much crap comes out..
Here's my guess. Some rust has set up near the top of the block (water level inside the block for all those years) and is blocking flow probably at the water jackets in the heads. perhaps flush with straight water and lots of crystal drano (acid) or remove the thermostat and bottom hose and try to blow it out with air pressure. (safer) Theese are just common sense solutions that pose MANY RISKS! so if you try anything like this you DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK! but just an idea or two to throw out there. Maybe run vinegar in the coolant system? Anyway, good luck and be careful.
