From my 79 trans am I remember the rear discs do
not clamp in. They must be rotated in the correct
direction to reset the parking brakes. From then on
I really appreciated rear drum brakes.

+1 i used to have a 96 and there was a special tool you need to spin the piston back in the caliper, it wasnt just a regular brake cube. I dont know if they changed the design from 96 to 01 though
Go to autozone and rent the correct tool. Dont buy that little 8 dollar socket tool either. Its a 35 dollar deposit and you get the tool that will spin and push the piston back into the bore. It has several different plates to fit your caliper piston. Also loosen the cap on the master cylinder to allow the fluid to push back. You get your deposit back from autozone when you return the tool.
