Default Cats...

I've got a 01 stock GT, and I'm trying to figure out what will pass emissions for my exhaust. Where exactly are that catalytic converters on my car? Also, a buddy of mine told me that putting long tube headers on my car will probably make me fail emissions, is he right? And also how much of an effect will an off road mid pipe have as well? H or X. Thanks in advance.

The cats are located just down from the exhaust manifold. You can see them by looking underneath the car where the exhaust comes down from the engine compartment.Long tube headers without cats might cause you to fail an emissions test,as will the off road pipe. This depends on the type of test. Some states only hook up to the diagnostic port of the ECM and look to see if there are any codes stored, others use a sniffer to check exhaust gasses. If your state hooks to the diag.port, then Malfunction Indicator Light eliminators(MIL'S)should keep the exhaust from throwing codes and you should pass emissions. Some will also do a visual inspection. The long tube headers and no cats will fail miserably in this case. There are good exhaust systems out there with cats and mid length headers that you can use although I don't know how strict your state's inspections are.If you have a shop that you can talk to,ask them what you can get away with.

The cats are located in the H-pipe. There are usually 2 pre-cats and 2 regular cats for a total of 4. A lot of aftermarket H-pipes with cats only have the two larger cats in a high flow design and are emissions legal. Probably this is your best bet.

Can I do long tube headers with an off road pipe and still keep the cats? I don't really want to get rid of them. Or can I just do long tube headers and still keep the cats, and just go with a regular H or X pipe?
