Default Lack of Gas Mileage

I recently purchased a 2000 GT with 78,000 miles on it. The car has the 4.6L engine and has straight pipe exhaust. The problem i'm having is the car gets HORRIBLE gas mileage. while i know you don't buy a Mustang for the gas mileage, it's only getting 10 to 13 mpg. any suggestions on how to get a little more bang for the bucks at the pump or maybe what the problem could be?
