Default cant get it started

Im having some trouble getting my car to start. I bought a 89 gt with no motor/wireing and had to replace just abouteverything else inside the car. I went to try and start itfor the first time today and nothing... the starter soleniod doesnt even make a clicking sound. I have power to the starter relay on the fender but nothing after that. when i turn the ignition to the "on position" the lights on the dash come on but as soon as i turn it to the "ignition" position everything goes off, the lights/tach/everything, but as soon as i release it the lights come back on.I went and got a new starter relay that goes and on the fender and still nothing. even made sure all my grounds were in good shape.I hope the description I gave is ok but i cant figure this out and i need to get this car running. what should i do now?

i also heard that these cars are known for having bad ignition switches on the column. any chance it could be that. if someone could post a pic of what wires go where on the relay that would be a huge help for me too.

In order to run, a motor needs air, fuel, and spark. This forms combustion. Your problem could be a hundred different things. The ignition switch could be the culprit, but I would double check all the wiring first. Then, you start to diagnose. First off, 89's are mass air. You need a mass air sensor, TPS, and all that good FI stuff wired correctly. You will also need your fuel pump to pressurize the rail. I would check this with a fuel pressure gauge first, or simply listen for it to pressurize when you turn the key, (assuming your ign switch works correctly) Then after that, spark. Make sure you hooked up distributor, coil, wires, etc. That's a very simple place to start. Chances are it won't be that easy to start your car. I wouldn't worry too much about non essential wiring and **** until you get the motor running. It just complicates things. I would also check ALL of your fuses, or anything that could break a circuit anywhere on the car. I hope that gets you rollin in the right direction. Unfortunately, unless one of us wired your car, we can't really help you too much. I suggest get a volt meter with a continuity tester and make sure all your wires hit where they're supposed to if you still can't find an easy problem to fix. Then after that, it becomes trial and error. Hopefully you arent in a hurry to get this thing on the road.
