Default Temperature Gauge

While I was driving recently, my temperature sensor on the left side of the gauge dropped down to C.

I have no idea why that happened. Sometimes when I start up it moves up to halfway but like 5 minutes into a drive, the gauge dies again.

I attached pictures

I was wondering if someone can help me out with a few questions:

Possible reasons?
Possible solutions?

I brought it to my local mechanic and he said he doesn't even know where the temperature sensor is... he thinks that's what it is.
He checked my car and said that my engine isn't overheating, so I'm OK driving but have to keep and eye on the water.

it could possibly be your coolant temp sending unit, that could be bad, but if it does go up sometime, i would check the wire that goes to it.. maybe give it a wiggle, ha take it off, check it out, and put it back on.. if it still doesn't work, go get another sending unit, put some sealer on it and screw it back it and hook it up

I'm really really really new to modding my car. Where would I go about checking the the coolant temp sending unit?

Also where can I find like information as to which wires it would be as well as how I'd be able to find the unit to buy online?

Hi,

Thats bascially what your looking for. Id also recomend buying a manual for your car such as a Haynes or a Clinton manual.
Also seeing as your new, just ask questions if you cant find the info you need from searches.

We all have to start somewhere

i am not completely sure where it is located at, cause i dont really have a car like yours to look at, but yeah that looks like the right thing in the link. that looks exactly like the part that i screwed into my block on my 2.3l.

very good idea, i have noticed that the chilton and the haynes aren't very complete manuals. I heard the Mitchell ones are the best, i am off to get one today. The chilton and the haynes are very good for skimming the surface of your problems, but if you want to get in depth to solve the problem, you need to find another manual somewhere else
