Default Steering issue

I've noticed thisfor about a month or so now. When i turn my wheel at slow speeds (i.e. backing or pulling out of parking spots) i hear a straining noise. It's sounds like my cars front wheels are staining to tun the tires but i dont have any loss or control of the vehicle. Its a 01 V6 convertable. Any help would be appreciated. Hopefully its not an expensive fix.

t's only in normal operation. Ill be turning the wheel to get out of a parking spot and it sounds like creaking. Like something is straining to turn the wheels. I do not hear it at higher speeds (which just might be that im not able to hear it) But it is when i crank the wheel at slow speeds.

Well i just went out and looked under after taking a drive around and on the drivers side steering gear dust boot there is gunk on the lower half of it. Does this help diagnose any problem?
