Default a/c compressor

ok so my a/c compressor is making a clicking sound. i was told by a mechanic that the compressor is going out and that i need to replace it. my question is has anyone had this problem before and if so do i really need to replace the whole thing or will just the clutch fix it? i dont want to buy the whole thing if its not necessary.

thanks

Is the system charged?
Has there been a leak?
Does the compressor turn or does the clutch just cycle on and off?
What do you mean by "click" ?

If the freon has leaked out you'll need to add more.If the system needs to be charged use a couple of cans with oil and finish with just dry freon.

ya its charged. everything works fine, there's just a slight freon leak out of the front of the compressor where the clutch is. and there is a clicking/knocking sound coming from the compressor. i was told this means that it is going out.

If it is leaking you will have to change out the entire compressor.
