Default 1996 Ford Explorer transmission issues

Okay its my girls truck, she comes ot pick me up and she is saying the car won;t shift... so we get oin a main road and sure enough its being bitchy shifting from 1st to second doesn't want to do it and it refuses to accelerate also, kinda like a complete dead spot... but if she lets off the gas enough or somtimes compeltely it will up shift...

then on teh highway its doing the same thing... then the O/D light on the guage cluster is blinking... so im thinking okay... transmission seems likes its slipping pretty bad, but this according to her is an OVERNIGHT happening... lie she drove it earlier and it was fine, now on her way to my house it was doing it...

im thinking transmission is finally had it... has 160k miles on it but according to her brother who previously owned it... it had been rebuilt 5 years ago...

or it could be a vaccum hose that popped off i really dunno, and hte CEL did come on after a little bit of driving... gonna have codes pulled but any input would be nice and if any ones knows what kind of transmission the truck uses... weather its an AODE or what itd be nice ot know incase it does need a rebuilt id rather buy the tranny and install a newer one my self.

Well, it could be the E4OD and could be a vacuum line came off. How does the shifter feel? Does it have a lot of "play" in it? If so, I'm thinking that the wires coming off the shift lever are grounding in the column.

It does sound like it's going to be a solinoid issue. Those are inside the trans. I'm not a real big trans guy so I would look at the wiring on the side of the trans and if you are ambitious, maybe the wiring inside to see if you can see anything obvious. I think you may need to take it to a trans shop though. I'm not sure how to test it.

Ive had valve body gaskets that come apart and allow fluid to leak past the gaskets. sometimes you loose 2nd or third gear. The other thing I have seen is the intermediate band breaks and you loose 2nd gear. If you pull the trans pan you should be able to see if the valve body gaskets are torn. should be on passenger side of valve body.
