Angry Headlight, fuse running light problem!

Hey all, thanks in advance.

My 96 vert (6 cyl) has a weird problem with the headlight switch, or wiring, or both.

Recently, I noticed my running lights staying on, even though the light switch was all the way off.

- I didn't want to run my battery down, so temporarily I found a fuse in the engine compartment (red 10amp, right in the middle) that I unplugged and the lights went off.

This is where the weird part comes in!

After removing the fuse and having the running lights go off, I noticed that if I pulled the headlight switch, the LIGHTS WOULD GO ON! the running lights, headlights and dash lights would all work just fine.

The fuse that I pull is the HD LPS (4th from side closest to engine), fuse is RED 50amp.

Of course my radio and clock stopped working, but the lights still worked.

How could the fuse that turned off the lights (that shouldn't be on) not stop them from going on when the switch was on????

I bought a new light switch, but I don't think that can be it.

As a side note, my mirro light (it's a convertible) stopped working a while back, not sure if it has anything to do with it. Also, the car was sitting for a few years prior to me buying the car, so lots of rust under dash. But this problem happened almost a year after driving it everyday.

With the fuse pulled, my headlights still work, my radio and clock don't.

With fuse in, everything works, but when lights are turned off, the running lights and dash lights stay on.

Wierd thing, drove it today. Turned lights off, no problem (it can be intermitten), then as I was by my car, the lights slowly faded ON. After about 30 seconds they went from all the way off, to all the way on. They did flicker several times during the process, but the end result is the lights stay come on.

whacky!

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance.

Somehow you have your illumination wire hooked to constant power. Did you recently install a new radio?

I installed a new radio almost a year ago now. I added a new ground to try to fix a revving squeel on am stations almost 6 months ago.

Nothing near the time this problem happened. And the problem is intermitten. I have went a month without it happening, and then it started again.

I am beginning to think a rat chewed through two wires that are sitting next to each other and they touch from time to time.???

Any more suggestions?
