Default Throttle body/egr/ mass help

I am retrofitting an engine with an efi from a 5.0 mustang. I don't need the egr and have seen block off plates. Can't I just remove the whole egr adapter and mount the throttle body closer to the manifold? Also, because of space problems does the mass air flow meter have to be a certain distance from the throttle body? I would like to mount it close so I have more air cleaner room.
Thanks
Rick
