do i need to take off the upper intake manifold in order to get the to the idle speed control motor on my 89 gt?

do you mean the idle air control or iac? the iac is on the throttle body, so the answer to your question is no. you don't have to take anything off.

i replaced that today. but the manual says there is a idle speed control motor as well but it doesn't tell where it is.

Sounds like you need to invest in a chilton's manual or atleast a hayne's

i will admit---i'm not too good with motors but i can do most minor repairs...i have the haynes(it sucks)

I agree hayne's are awful for newb's but i like them just because of the tourqe spec's and sequence's
