someone hlp question about gears
hey guys i was planning on buying gears soon and was wondering what is everything i need to buy for the gears to be insatlled and around how much would it cost for everything. also what do u think is better 3.73s 0r 4.10s for a 2004 mach 1 and 2003 gt? thankyou
The gears and install cost me $500. If you have over 50,000 miles i'd reccomend getting a new bearing kit as well. Also, you'll speed cal adjuster or hand held tuner to adjust your speedo after the gear install.

I asked this question before too. Everyone told me that if you are staying naturally aspirated then go with 3.73's or 4.10's. Turbos and superchargers 3.55's or 3.27's. General guidlines I guess.
If it is an auto then I would go with 4.10's if NA and 3.55's if FI. If its an MT than I would go 3.73's if NA or 3.27's if FI. JMO.
I had a 93 Camaro with 4.10's and an auto and it was great even being drove across the country twice. Still got better mileage than my wifes 4.8 Tahoe on the same trip.
I think bearings are not needed other than the pinion bearing. Axle bearings will probably outlast the car.

Don't try to do this yourself unless you know what you are doing and have the proper equipment. If you do go with new bearings, and I can't imagine why you wouldn't since everything is apart, you will need a bearing splitter and a 20 to press to remove the old ones from the carrier and install the new ones on both the carrier and pinion. You will also need an impact gun capable of crushing the pinion crush sleeve. I have an 1100 ft/lb Snap-On gun and it can still be tough. A Craftsman or Harbor Freight/Wal-Mart type gun won't cut it. You also need to know how to set the wear pattern on the gears. It's not rocket science but it does take some knowledge and you can ruin the gears if you get it wrong. Not trying to discourage anyone but this is something that is not as easy as it would seem.
You will need the gears and a bearing kit if it has any type of miles on it. Have it professionally installed. The tolerance on gears is very small and you will not be able to do it without a shim kit. I paid a friend $100 to pretty much do it for me, he is a master tech at a ford dealership, so he knew what he was doing. You will also need the rear end oil and the friction modifier if you are supplying all your own parts. 4.10's in an auto, 3.73's in a stick.
