Default GT40 Heads?

Hey guys, quick question here

Found these heads at a local junkyard, $100 each

Casting number is F3ZE-AA, according to this link, if accurate, these are 60-63cc GT-40 Cobra heads circa 1993 with 1.84/1.54 valves - should be a slight improvement over stock heads on a '67 mustang, no? Especially with the Performer intake manifold that was installed by the first owner with a Holley 600cfm 4bbl on top. Not sure about the cam at all, but the car has a 3-speed auto trans with stock converter and approx 2.76 gears.

Considering any used head I buy will go to the shop for inspection and reconditioning before running it ($200 pair, valves extra) so the surface condition doesn't scare me plus the seller guarantees them good or he will replace them; and no shipping

If no valves are required I'd be into the heads for $400, then gotta replace springs, etc. I'll have the stock rockers but will probably look at rollers, either full or tip, Comp Cam's pro magnum rollers look nice... Throw in some new gaskets and I'm right around $850-900 bolted on if I'm lucky

Cheapest aftermarket I have found is the Edelbrock E-Street alu head for $921 complete, sans rocker, push rods, etc

Probably a new cam in my future too but I'd like to see what improvement just new heads make to the car, one trick at a time the old man always said

What thinks ye here?

How much to spend on something is relative. There are similar heads, albeit cleaner, going for upwards of $500-$600 online, condition unknown.

For $200 a pair (either GT40 various castings including GT40P) and another $200 in the shop to blast, clean, mag, install new guides as needed, freshen up seats, replace seals, paint, etc. - it seems I have now a set of heads I KNOW are good vs. the "pig in a poke" online. BTW I trust my local shop and have given them plenty of work over the years.

What ever I spend on rocker arms, springs, etc. are expenses that would come up when doing upgrades anyway (springs in the case of a cam swap) so the real number I would be into the GT40 heads is around $400 after shop time, not including gucci parts like roller rockers, etc.

BTW the place I bought these from have about 20 sets on the shelf, mostly F3ZE-AA but a few GT40P as well, but all in similar condition as per pics.

Yes they do look rough, but they cleaned up great in the shot tank, all valves were good too, will post pics this week for those that like pics...

The seller had at least 10-20 sets of heads on a shelf, outside, all were rough, some much worse. He let me go through and find the ones I wanted, even saw several sets of P heads, all same price, $200 pair

I have a deal with my engine builder: I bring him heads, he cleans, mags, replaces guides and seals, freshens up valves and seats, measures installed height and spring rates, paints and reassembles heads - I give him $200 cash

I have done this with several sets over the years, works out great, takes about a week but not being in a rush is part of the deal
