Default Steering Issues?

I have an issue with my mustang, And to throw it out there, Its an 88GT. I am new to the forum(i realized i registered an account here years back, just never visited it.) But here is my issue. Whenever im driving, it feels as if there is play in the steering, like one wheel is not catching up with the other. then afterwards the steering wheel is crooked and turned to that side even when i am going straight. If i turn it the opposite direction, it feels the same way and is crooked to the other side. Now, i have tried to see if there is any slack in the tie rod ends, but i do not notice any. What else could it be?

Thanks in advance for any replies or advice.

I would check for wearing in the steering linkage if you have ruled out the tie rods and ball joints as for the slack in the steering

could be tires or rack and pinion... are you hearing any thumps or knocking/popping?

Sounds like a bad rack and pinion to me.
