Why the mustang?
Dudes, it's like comparing a 281 to 350, or 5.7L v8 to 7.5L v10. They are different cars with different engines, different weight and handling characteristics. Making a 5.7L walk over a 302 is not impressive, making a 302 walk over a 5.7L is impressive. It comes down the styling you like. I like Dodge Viper GTS-R, i can't offord it thought.

I respect the power of the 5.7, but they look wierd, especially late camaros. The only GM I like are '02 Trans-Ams. Get a 99+ Mustang, they look awesome, especially once you get a body kit on 'em.
I've owned 5 Camaro's in my past. Loved 'em just fine. I ended up going to "The dark Side of the Fords" looking for an El 'Camino. They were way overpriced versus thier condition & I happened upon a Ranchero. I basically learned to work on Fords & my tastes grew to like thier unique style(compared to the F-bodies). Nothing more to it than that really.... Any American musclecar can be made to handle, go fast, & look sharp. What I formerly had & now currently have simply was what I could afford at the time. Since it's currently a Mustang; they are what I am an enthusiastic about & enjoy wrenching on. If i could have afforded a 'vette? I'd a bought one, modified it, & you'd be seeing me at the drag strip running with the 'vette crowd(flame suit on).
I've owned a 93GT, 95Cobra vert, a 99 Trans Am and now my 97 GT. Like most have said, the LS1 engines are very powerful, often underrated on HP. My 99 TA would walk all over any of my Mustangs with ease. However, it is very easy to make a car faster and with a few grand I could make my Mustang beat a T/A.
Like others have said though, I believe it comes down to style. The Mustangs are shorter than the F-Bodies, more fun to drive and, at least in the newer Fbodys, I can actually see the end of the hood. Owning a Mustang is like owning a piece of American history.
Couldn't agree more on this. My brother had a camaro with a 305 and it was a joke. The 302 would kill it and the fox body cars look much better. In fact, that applies to all Mustangs over Camaros/T/A in my book.

u said ur looing for late 80s early 90s, DEFFINETLY gewt the mustang, the 5.0 smokes those 3rd gen maros, they are awfully slow stock.
dude this i dont think is true. first off the ls1 cars are a gm product which means its cheap and a lot of aftermarket. second the mustang parts arent that cheap unless ur talkin about the 5.0 or maybe the 351 but they are still expensive.

One reason to buy a Mustang is because of the aftermarket support. You can buy every single part through many different aftermarket suppliers. This keeps costs down and interest high.Camaros and T/A's have pitiful aftermarket support.Thats one reason why I bought my Mustang.Mustangs also seem to hold their value better than The F-bodies.

You will vastly increase you vagina intake in a mustang...better yet..make it a vert' and you'll have to beat the women off with a stick..you know what stick I'm talkin' about too.

I can't add much more to what has already been said other than to reaffirm some things.
1. my gf had a 2001 Firebird and the thing was always falling apart. If it wasn't the engine it was something on the interior randomly falling off.
2. I've owned 3 Mustangs and they are strong. Even the 40 year old six cylinder wouldn't die if you tried to kill it. In one case 5 of it's spark plugs were clogged with oil and it was still running. (just a little even slower).
3. Out of the newer Mustangs, a '00 V6 with 112,000 and a '01 GT with 68,000 , I seriously have never had a single problem with reliability.
I don't even know how many miles the 66 has on it, since the odometers don't read over 100,000 in that model. It's at least 170,000, but more likely 2 or 370,000. Like I said...the engine would run on ONE SPARK PLUG.
Those LS1's will definitely roll on a stock GT. But that's only if they crank you know
