the way is see it you have 3 choices:
1. keep the z. youll be hard pressed to find a better car in the bang-for-the-buck area.
2. buy a g-body. a decent GN goes for around 7k around here. dump 2k in it and hit mid 10's with money left over and while remaining VERY streetable.
3. buy a $1500 fox. and dump in the rest of the money.
very few people have clean foxes
or if you're up for a good laugh do this with a mustang II. ive seen near mint examples go for $500. find a solid one and make it a total sleeper. then go out and scare old men in 'vettes.

The Camaro, I didn't get that, I had to be so careful driving it because you cant see **** outside the car and the interior was so cheap I was afraid I'd break something....
As a lifetime Camaro guy, I was pretty disappointed when the new Camaros came out.....

I like that you want to see both sides. Shows charactor.
Dollar for dollar, it will be hard to beat what you have. But if you want to find a good starting point to build on, start at the 4 cam motor and go from there. Or be really creative and get the V6, build the crap out of it, and be faster than V8 Mustangs or Camaros.
You're grouping of engine by decade sucks as most changed mid way through. Some of the early 80s Mustangs got 4.2L V8s with under 180hp. The mid 80s sucked almost as much. The 5.0L made crap power (in stock form) all the way through '95. SOHC 4.6L changed in '99. Listing the Y2K Cobra R is almost pointless as they only made a handful.

Funny you ask that. That's the first thought that came to my mind during my test drive....that the Mustang wasn't a diva, it was a mans car.... easy to drive, solid and would take anything I threw at it.
