Default How many miles is too many?

Considering a 1996 Mustang GT Convertible for my Daughter. it has 180K miles. $3300. Is this just too many miles or do they just run forever?

any feedback would be appreciated.

I wouldn't do it. Personally. That's a LOT of miles. You could be paying for a car that's $3300 and could have engine issues down the road that could be more than what you're paying for the car. I'd pass, personally.

I'd keep looking, that's not that great of a deal. Mileage isn't everything though, it's how the car is maintained

General rule of thumb on newer cars from around the mid 90's and up, if you don't get at least 300,000mi out of the engine, it was either a lemon or not properly maintained.

I just replaced head gaskets and swapped a cam on my 5.0 with around 225,000mi, and it had almost 0 wear, cylinder walls looked brand new still. And that's on an engine that gets raced and driven hard, it sees over 6k rpm pretty much every time it's driven.

If you know the car was properly maintained and not abused, then 180k isn't anything to worry about. If you're not certain, then it could be hit and miss.

I agree, there is not limit on miles to say it's no good. Look at the rest of the car and try to draw a conclusion.

Does it consume oil, is the suspension worn, is the interior good condition.

I drive a tow truck with 700,000kms on it. The drivetrain is as good as new but the interior is killed.
My 87 Ram had 137,000km on it. Engine was worn. I bought a 5.9L Magnum for it to rebuild. The replacement eng had over 500,000km but since it was going in for rebuild. I didn't care. Took it apart, saw ZERO wear. Threw gaskets and valve seals in it and installed it as is. It was obviously maintained, unlike my original engine.

These motors will last. Plus there's so many cheap 4.6 motors if it does blow u can get it running again for a few hundred bucks.
