cleaning/painting engine parts
so, for starters, my upper intake is about 15 years old and looks like ***.
lets say i take it off, which im planning to do, how do i go about getting the original paint or whatever it is, off (its flaking in several areas)? wire wheel? sand blasting?!?!?
the plate on the intake is corroded. wire wheel as well, or some type of solvent/cleaning agent? sand blasting?!?!?
then, aside from powdercoating, im guessing some type of high temp paint is the only choice? any recommendations?
is there anything that can be done for heads, if for nothing else than to just knock the rust off them? wire wheel again?
thanks in advance

i will almost certainly end up going the wire wheel route. do i have to start getting into wire stiffness, thickness, anything like that to avoid damaging the surfaces?

Generally, a wire wheel isnt going to hurt anything, most likely it will be softer than what your working on. You have to be careful of abrasive type wheel because they can remove material faster, Just pay attention to your work and you'll be ok. Especially pay attention to aluminum as it is soft metal compared to steel.
I wish I had a decent sized garage with a freakin lift!! I live in an aprtment and cant open the doors all the way in my little garage...I also wish I had a media blaster...paint booth..etc..
