Default Synchro for 5th gear question

Hi,

I'm interested in buying a 86 Mustang GT but one thing concerns me. The buyer made this comment about the 5th gear in the transmission:

"Trans need looked at I believe the synchro for 5th gear is bad it will shift into 5th but do nothing"

Should I be concerned with this? I don't mind putting some work in to it but I don't want this to be one of those cases where the tranny is insanely expensive to fix or replace.

Thoughts?
Thanks!

Yes, if there's no 5th gear, plan on a tranny rebuild. Or find a good used one depending on what your plans are for the car

T5 tranny are fairly cheap rebuild compared to other trannys. Around me there's a guy that does it for $800 with core. And they come with a couple nice updates also. It's odd that 5th went out, usually it's 3rd that goes if any.

And if your doing the replacing yourself, they're very easy to replace. They only weigh 75 lbs if I remember correctly. If your good with a wrench, plan on a couple hours if everything goes well, and your back on the road. Good luck

These little t5s are among some of the easiest transmissions to work on, Ive rebuilt several of them. I wouldn't let a little thing like missing 5th gear stop me from getting the car. In fact I would use it as an excuse to low ball the **** out of the guy lol.
