A4LD Torque converter install
Have a 93 Mustang that had a leaking front seal. A4LD trans. Replaced both the front and rear seals and the filter (which was clean). Having a problem getting the torque converter back in all the way. Did it once by putting the trans on end and kept lifting it up and it finally dropped in place. But fell off when we put in on the jack
. Now it does not want to "go in". I know it is essential that it fit in the proper 2 slots on the end of the shaft. Any tips on getting it in? should the trans be horizontal or vertical? Do I put grease on the end of shaft to assist? Do I put trans fluid in the converter? Thanks ....

You should have put some fluid in the converter so that is was preloaded a little. leave the trans level, keep rotating the converter on the shaft with inward pressure and you will feel it click in. There should be two clicks.
I put a quart of trans oil in the converter (any more and it would leak out), had the trans in the normal horizontal position and then pushed and wiggled and turned the torque converter. It would not drop in. Did that for 20 minutes or so.????? It pushed into the first two splines but is still 1/4 inch away. Not in the 2 slots???
Not sure about the first two splines comment. Basically, when you place the converter onto the shaft and start turning it, it should slip into the first slot and then when you keep turning it and wiggling it, it should slip in one more time and be flush so that you can bolt it to the flywheel. Try turning and wiggling more slowly, perhaps you are just missing the point. I'm assuming that's the same trans and converter that came out of the car and therefore it should go back in in reverse sequence. I don't know what else to say or do except good luck.
Well, I finally figured out the problem. Not really me but a couple of transmission shops who were familiar with this transmission. When the torque converter fell out of the transmission the input shaft also fell out. I thought nothing of it and put it back in. BUT I PUT THE WRONG SIDE IN
. The shaft looks the same on both ends but it is not. The end that goes into the transmission has splines that are 1/4" shorter than the side that goes into the torque converter. Reverse them and your cannot get the torque converter to seat in the front pump. Turned the shaft around and got the torque converter to seat properly
