Best Tires to use?
I have had success w/ Nitto 555Rs and I now have some BFGoodrich KDWS tires on and like them. You could try either depending on what you are doing. BFGoodrich puts out a drag radial similar to the Nittos but not quite as good.

It depends on what you are looking for. You have to give up tread wear for a better hooking tire and vice versa.

If you never plan on making a trip to the drags, then dont even bother going with a DR,, UNLESS you go with nittos as they are the cheapest of them.(usually MT, Nitto, and BFG are the main 3, not in that order though)
MT's and BFG are your two stickiest, some would argue either way, however neither of them are, how should i put it... "tread friendly" some will tell you a max of 6K on MT's , but ive got about half that and showing little to no tread wear since i drive it so gently
but like zoie and 96 said^^, nitto might be a safe choice because they'll last the longest
and if youre only gonna stay on the street but still want something nice, nittos are your best bet
that way you can race from a dig on the streets and not just spin around while your opponent takes off

How often do you go to the track, if ever? Last season I ran the BFG DR's, and liked them pretty good. However, after fifteen or so trips to the track, burnouts and some street driving, I've got about 30% of the tread left. Probably enough for the first couple months of the year. The BFG's do hook well on the street, and I've driven them within reason in the rain with no problems.
Since my mustang is not my daily driver, I think my next tire will be the Mickey Thompson ET Streets. From what I've seen, they are the best hooking DR's for the strip. I'm not expecting them to live a very long life however.

Exactly what is considered good mileage on the Nitto 555's? I don't think any sticky hi-pro summer tire has much to brag about when it comes to mileage. What price handling, right? There are a number of V & Z rated M+S tires on the market now that have very high treadwear ratings......relatively speaking. Pirelli PZero Nero M+S and Avon 550 M+S are rated very high. Check this link to get you started. The first item is the Avon's which are very reasonably priced for the overall performance.
