GTO guys say the same thing about our cars. In stock form w/ equal drivers 05+GTO> GT. It's a good race with the 04's. Just telling the cold hard facts. The GTO guy should get a driver mod.
Well if they are faster... at least I can say my car doesnt sound like a *****...

I have seen ALOT of new GTO's run, nothing impressive or ground breaking IMO. Basicly we have an original (real ) GTO and go to the shows/ track events. So you get to see new and old goats run all damn day.

Most new GTO's struggle to hit under a 13.5. The "fast" guys that had nice tires, and intake/exhaust, some rear suspension work etc, were in the low 13's on street tires. But the majority couldent drive worth beans and were lucky to get under 13.9's due to wheelhop.

Two cars were set up with slicks and the above mods and were turning high 12's. But still were dealing with traction/wheelhop problems due to the poor IRS on those cars.

It is amazing how most modern GM cars have to struggle their arss off to turn good times. Even the new vette, sure it is fast. But a couple mags have written articles to the fact that not many have really matched the chevy claimed times with either a Z51 or ZO6. I think they are just inflating the numbers a bit, or have really good drivers.

Against a new mustang, it is a drivers race. And on a road course, I would take a stang over the new goat any day of the week.

I agree. On a side note why is it that GM makes all their cars look like a Grand Am? I've never understood that....go figure why they can't sell many GTO's

this is really interesting!

On paper, the 05+ GTO is a monster. I've seen stock chasis dyno's at 360rwhp. And they only weigh about 240# more than the Stang GT. In theory, they oughta be able to put down 13 flat with a skilled driver.

but...sounds like weight distribution and suspension geometry makes these things a b$tch to hook and that'll screw a 1/4 time quicker than anything.

anyway, congratulations on the kill

No sugar coating needed, the 05/06 GTO is a faster car than the 05/06 MGT.
However, like many said, track times be d@mned due to the wheelhop.
Same issue with the CTS-V's. Get a good launch and they'll fly, but
it takes practice to get the car to hook just right and even then, even with
a good driver, there will be a decent amount of times where you'll mess up.

From a roll, the 05+ GTO walks the MGT no problem.

There's another issue with the GTO and it's the gearbox.
The d@mn thing is notchy and missing a shift when trying to
speed shift is common.

The reason I think the GTO didn't sell well was it's mid-late 90's chassis with a modern
engine. Had GM upgraded the chassis when it was brought here, it probably would of
sold 3-4 times as many, especially when the dropped the LS2 engine in it.

I was driving around town the other day and came across a 2006 GTO at a stoplight. The guy nodded, so I knew he was ready...we both smoked the tires a little in first, then I did again in second...ended up beating him by 1/2 a car length at about 90 mph (thought that was good for a 45 mph speed limit.) It was great!!

My question is what are the optimal shift points for our cars? I have a stock 05 mustang GT 5 speed. I smoked the tires a little in first, drove it to 5.5k, shifted to 2nd at 6k and then again to third at around 5.5k. Are those the best shift points? It seemed to work...
optimal shift points will be where avg power per gear is highest. I have never seen a chasis dyno on a properly tuned sports car where the optimal shift wasn't at redline.

example from a real rwhp dyno of a stock GT 5 speed.
shifting from 1 to 2 at 5.5K you shift at 267rwhp(@5500rpm) but when you get into second your at ~170rwhp (@3250rpm)
going from 1 to 2 at 6.2K you shift at 260rwhp (@6200rpm) but when you get into second your at ~205rwhp (@3670rpm)

what you lose by hanging on until 6.2K (-7rwhp) you more than make up for by what you start off with in second (+35rwhp)

Here's a run with my Votech GT and a Procharged GTO with similar set-ups
We ran several times but he was always a half to one car length slower...

Horsepower (SAE net @ rpm)- 300 @ 5750
Torque (lb.-ft. @ rpm)- 320 @ 4500

http://www.fordvehicles.com/cars/mus...eatures/specs/

I'm not a pro at drag racing but if the mustang push 300hp at 5750rpm, it would make sense to take the rpm to alteast that, so i would say max out every gear (take it up to 6,000rpm)
