They've already tested it on a dyno with our cars. Our exhaust already breathes good. Shorties only made 3 to 5 hp. Not worth going through the money and hassle.

I'm just relaying what I've read in Mustang magazines, articles on the internet etc. I was going to buy shorties until I saw they're results.

Long tubes are not smog legal becasue they move the cats. That has been discussed many times, use the search feature or read this thread here: https://mustangforums.com/m_1814805/tm.htm

Now then, the catted ones will pass a tailpipe test. But they are technically not street legal.

I am very skeptical about 12 HP from shorties alone. Was that shorties plus a tune? Or shorties plus a different midpipe? I have personally witnessed several dyno runs with shorties, and the most I have ever seen was 6 HP, but before-and-after were on different days, so it's not 100% reliable. That is also consistent with what the mags are getting.

heres my advice.

JBA, American Racing, or Kooks.

Longtubes only

304 stainless, not ceramic coated.

proper install and tune.

You're SOL with JBA then. JBA is 409 stainless. Cheap crap, IMHO.

Amercan Racing and kooks are both top-notch, as is Dynatech.

Ok so after all that about smog legal here in CA and stuff is it really even worth the extra HP?I mean i'm going to be getting a bunch of HP when i install my Saleen S/C....so do i really need/want that LT mod?? I'm not racing my car other then the occasional street race its basically a daily driver.

Hey crazy al, yeah i understand your skepticism about the 12hp because the shorties have been played out as useless so much on this forum when they are infact great for some applications. There seems to be an idea that its either LTs or nothing. I agree 100% with stang skeleton. The shorties are legal, gain hp, and sound and are easier to install so they were a great compromise for me between stock and LTs. Anyway, about the 12hp; i had it initially dyno tuned with an intake, sct, and cat back exhaust. So i had an initial tune done and then got shorties which added 12hp after tuning to new specs. Obviously you need to tune it to gain significant hp for shorties, LTs, and even a full exhaust. Air Fuels etc change, and if they are not tuned properly you could even lose hp by running too lean/rich etc. I have also seen other cars that got about 7-8 hp as you have seen and honestly, it could be the tune, or the car itself. I mean some cars may not respond to the headers as well as others, just as some stock cars off the line dyno higher than others. So yes 12hp.
