Default A/C performance

It was 100 outside today, and not too humid. I am relatively new to Mustangs, but it seems like the AC does not work that well in my car (06 GT convertible, 24000 miles). It does not make any difference if its in recirculation mode and whatever the fan speed is. It does get a little colder only when the car moves faster than 45mph. I am not saying AC does not work but in my experience, on my Toyota when AC is on full blast you get frozen, it gets uncomfortably cold so I need to lower the fan speed or put the temp higher. What do you guys think and what the readings should be on the vents? Driving in the city at 100F the cabin does not really get to the comfortable temp like I would like it too. Seems like V8 engine should have a pretty big AC compressor and condenser, but...

I have 06 GT non convertible and mine is the same way. I took it to the dealer and they told me nothing was wrong with it.
But it seems to work better if you rev the car more. I have a tendency to keep mine under 2500 RPM and actually probably dog it a little. But if I drive it a little more aggressive it cools a lot better. Once out on the highway running 65-70 mph it cools just fine.
I have a 2002 F-150 and it wants to freeze me out most of the time at any rpm.
I do know the new mustangs are retro in the fact they allow engine heat from the firewall somewhat like the old ones.

Thank you. I normally keep RPM as low as possible in the city driving too...

Having the same problem here.
There's another recent thread in the main 2005-2008 forum about a/c problems.

Talked to a guy at work and he said the system must be low on coolant charge.
The a/c compressor is short cycling. It keeps turning on and off more than it should...

Listen to the a/c compressor while it's on and see if you can hear it clicking on and off a lot...

I think I'm going to get one of those re-charge kits.

Wow, this thread surprises me! I've got an 08 coupe and so far mine's been pretty cold. My family has always sworn by their Ford heaters and A/Cs! When I had the 06 I did notice the compressor turning on and off a lot. When I searched around this site at that time, everyone said it was normal. I haven't heard the 08 do that yet, but I haven't really been paying attention (the stingers make it a bit harder to notice that stuff).

Low on coolant charge? I guess that could be it, I'm just really surprised to hear it on such a new vehicle. I sort of reserved that stuff for older cars...

Anyway, hope you guys get some answers...

I have an 07 Coupe with 23000 miles and a UDP any my aircon works fine. I'd say it takes about 3-5 minutes to get the entire cabin cooled off.

Tinted windows will help - especially when temps are 100+.

hey guys, I have the same problem with my 06 with about 23k miles on it. Bought the recharge kit from wally world for around 20 bucks. has the re-usable guage on it, Plugged it in, and the needle jumped to the red. Read on bottle that the red means

"WARNING - YOUR SYSTEM HAS A PROBLEM BEYOND A RECHARGE, SEEK PROFESSIONAL HELP"

Now i dont drive the car all winter, and i use the ac maybe 10 times per summer here in new york. I took it in and as i write they are servicing it. (Joys of working at a dealship!)I will let you know what the outcome is and what the problem was.

Assuming you have no problems with the unit, you should be able to get a duct temperature of 45 deg or so with an A/C thermometer at expressway speeds after 15 to 20 minutes on non stop driving. I like for mine to be 40 Deg or colder and will play with the charge to get there.

Please keep in mind that these days they engineer the A/C just barely big enough to do the job. I have also found on my 07 that the underhood temps are very hot and some of the cold refigerant line running right next to exhaust manifolds. One of the first things I did to my 07 was insulate all exposed cold lines everywhere I could to maximize cooling. I also found that mine was light on charge. Adding a 3 oz can of refrigerant made a big difference.

Good Luck.
