I got significant gains with the CAI and then about as much more with the Bama tunes. I traded in my 97 Explorer and also had the K&N installed on it. I went K&N (out of force of habit) immediately after buying the car and then found this forum so I would have probably gone Steeda or JLT or C&L if I hadn't already gone K&N.
Yea thats what i was going to do out of habbit but im kind of glad i checked things out. thanks

and im in the same boat you are with the axlebacks. think i will end up going with the stingers. either the borla's or the frpp branded ones.
welcome to the forum and have fun with your new mustang.
is that common having the check engine light pop on if u didnt have a tune. with my expolorer i had a chip and that always made my check engine light come on.

sorry im tyring not to be a n00b with my new car haha

My wife got me the K&N last Christmas after asking my brother. He wasn't the Mustang expert and just went off the ads he saw on TV. I would have gotten a JLT/C&L or Steeda if I would have had the choice, but hey, it was a surprise and really nice of her, so I kept it. I got a set of Brenspeed tunes and the combo really woke the stang up! I might upgrade in the future, but for now I'm happy with it.

Another choice would be to get a tuner and a tune without any CAI. That is what I did for over a year. I ran the K&N drop-in replacement air filter (in the stock air box) and loaded tunes from BamaChips for DD or track duties. You get the biggest increase from the tune itself. I just installed a JLT-II CAI last night and have to say that the CAI does not make as big a difference as any of the other mods I have done (for daily driving duty). I do however, expect to get much better times/speed at the track with the CAI.

The C&L lStreet ooks the best, but the JLT does basically the same thing (some say it flows slightly better) for about $100 less. Use the left over cash for some UDP's or something.

The JLT looks just fine once it's installed.

Specially when you get it color matched to your car.

Once you get the tune with the handheld, the check engine light goes off, right?

There is an upside to doing the K&N. I had that on for a couple of months before I could afford a tuner, so at least I had the 10 - 15 HP gains over stock while I waited on the extra money for the Bama tuner/tunes.

If you can afford to get both at one time you'll end up with an extra 5 HP or so.
