A friend of mine with a history of RX-8 claimed oil leaks were routine over certain mleage (I know -- second-hand hearsay) So whatever vehicle you have will have maintenance and repair issues. I know recip engines. I don't know rotaries. I go with recip.

The Mustang is what I want, it's true that I can get a new 08 for less than 25k? I spoke to a guy on the lot that just bought an 08 for 25k. I was shocked. I found one for sale on craigslist, but hes asking 20k for an 06. And he's firm on that. I'll post a link:

I just got my brand new 08 gt for 21k and they were selling the manuals for 20k at the dealership. my car had not been test driven even once.

I bought an '82 RX7 brand new back when and used Mobil 1 synthetic oil. I used a quart of oil every 1,500 miles or so because I was told the rotor seals are oil injected to make them last longer. I only found this out from a buyer that asked me a trick question over the phone. He asked me if it used any oil. When I told him, yes, as a matter of fact it uses about a quart every 1,500 miles or so, he knew I was telling the truth. He ended up buying the car.
It got expensive throwing a quart of synthetic oil in all of the time with the amount of miles I was driving not to mention doing so in the middle of winter. I'm not sure if the newer Mazda rotary engines have an improved design or not.
Another thing to think about is SAFETY! I've seen some pretty bad wrecks of Mustangs and most people come out unscathed. It's 5 star crash rated for front and side impact as well as rollover. What's your life worth?

These forums will never post reliable info. They are like using wikipedia, or asking loan sharks the reliability of a loan. pose the same question at an rx-8 forum and tell us about the lack of parody....
