Default Gas tank? help?

i've noticed every now and then whenever i go to the gas station, if i'm filling up my car and i hold the pump all the way down, the car will kick it out, and act like its full, even after like 5 gallons of gas, and will continue to do so for any amt extra after this point... is this normal with colder temperatures? i've also noticed this happens more frequently if i've been driving hard just prior to going to the pump, could this be part of the reason? or is this an entirely different issue all together?

thanks for the help

It's a known issue. How long have you had the car for?

There is a TSB out on this. On some cars the problem appears to be unfixable. Even after replacing the tank.

mine was one of the unfixable ones, i get around it by turning the pump upside down while filling the car up... it doesnt kick it out at all, but i kind of look retarted holding the pump upside down haha

My car isn't as bad as some but it will still do it. Even if I drain the tank down to almost nothing I can usually only get about 14.5 gallons into it. IMO it never fully fills up. When it cuts off there is at least a gallon worth of empty space because the tank doesn't quite breathe right. As a result I can keep squeezing to top it off but if I do that I run the risk of overfilling it and dumping gas down the side of the car. Having done that to myself once I don't bother trying to top it off any more. I just know that the tank is never completely full.

I thought I was alone with this problem. Mine only does it at certain gas stations which I have to avoid now.

That's because it's the gas stations pumps. It's not limited to mustangs or fords. My wifes old pt cruiser did it at certain stations.

Try another gas station.
